League of Extraordinary Gentlemen TV series announced by Fox

There was quite an interesting announcement a couple of days ago; Fox have commissioned a pilot for a TV series based on Alan Moore’s comic series ‘League of Extraordinary Gentlemen’. It’s been reported that Fox have ordered a ‘put pilot’ of the series, which (as I understand it) means that they’ve committed to produce the pilot and will pay a penalty if it doesn’t air. Basically it sounds like there’s a really good chance that this is going to see the light of day.

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is is a comic book series by Alan Moore (V for Vendetta, Watchmen and more) that’s about a group of Victorian era literary characters that team up to fight evil/crime, whatever takes their fancy really. The League features characters like Captain Nemo (20,000 Leagues Under the Sea), Allan Quatermain (King Solomon’s Mines), Mina Harker (Dracula) and Dr Jekyll/Mr Hyde (Strange Case of Doctor Jekyll and Mr Hyde, surprisingly). They’re a bit like a steampunk Avengers I guess.

As far as I can tell the TV series isn’t going to have anything to do with the 2003 movie that starred Sean Connery as Allan Quatermain. I actually quite enjoyed the film, it’s was pretty silly but ultimately pretty good fun. I’m told that it was dreadful compared to the original comics, but as I’ve only flicked through the first volume then I didn’t have a lot to compare the movie to. I was actually pretty surprised to find out that League of Extraordinary Gentlemen was Sean Connery’s last time on the big screen, I certainly didn’t think it was bad enough to completely kill his career.

This news isn’t exactly hot off the press, I read about it a couple of days back, but I thought it was quite interesting and there’s certainly some promise to make an entertaining series out of it. Apparently Michael Green (Heroes, Smallville and Green Lantern) is going to be the writer and executive producer for the pilot and then act as show runner if it gets picked up, so I guess there’s at least some form with working with superheroes on TV. The less said about Green Lantern the better really.
